“I want you to make him suffer for even thinking of being with somebody else after all I did for him.”

Roman groaned internally. “No, you don't...you think you do, but you don't. You'll go home and be mad and...I don't know, c-cry and eat ice cream or whatever it is girls do. But then you'll get over it.” Though once he'd said it, Roman was pretty sure that was exactly what he'd do if he were in that situation. It was too late to take it back, but if he survived this encounter, he'd tuck that personal realization away for later.

“I did not summon you from the pits of Hell for emotional counseling!”

“I was at Dave's Dive...” Roman tugged a branded napkin out of his coat pocket. “It's like four blocks from here. My stomach hurts. C-can I leave?”

VISUAL REF SHEET

Roman is a college student from Montana, 1995, and boy does he look it. He wears a big baggy green tie-dye shirt, cargo shorts, sandals (when he wears shoes) glasses, and a goofy karate kid style headband. His sandy hair brushes his shoulders and his face is a battlefield of acne and freckles. His skin is light brown and his nose down turned slightly. After much trial and error a tiny goatee peppers his chin. Roman talks with a Midwestern accent and has a hard consonant stutter due to a motorcycle wreck he was in at age 11.

Then there are the demon bits--a pair of curling ram's horns, small useless wings, rusty cloven hooves and a long tail that splits at its end, tipped in barbs. Fangs, claws, long forked tongue, slit pupils, yadda yadda.

Abilities
  • Illusion - Roman can appear as anyone or anything his imagination can conjure for up to one hour.
  • Prestidigitation - Roman can perform small magics like producing noises, small objects, smoke, flashes of light, and anything else you'd expect a demon to be able to do. Effects last up to thirty minutes.
  • Float - Roman can levitate about four feet off the ground and move at walking speed if he chooses.
  • Pyromancy - He's a demon. Gotta breathe fire now and then.

The more magic Roman uses, the more exhausted he gets. If he tries anything too fancy, the magic could flicker or even fail! He must recharge at the Mana Pools.

  • Devil's Deals - Here's the big one. His whole deal is, well, deals. While he cannot create new things or summon things from home, he can alter objects and characters already in the game. Wanna be taller? He can do that. Want to shoot lasers out of your eyes? He can do that too. Want to forget that dumb thing you said the other day? Well, you know...it all comes at a price. Watch your words very closely and be sure to butter him up first or he may choose to take things very literally.

Effects last for a maximum of one hour and he can only perform one deal a day.

    Character Information
    Name: Roman Gulliver
    Appearance: art by me
    Age: 21
Canon Point: Shortly after the end of Terms and Conditions
Canon History: Here's a 40 page short story I wrote in college. I usually let this serve as his wiki page. Please do not feel pressured to read this.

    Character History:

CLIFF NOTES VERSION of the history provided above.

Roman took the long way home from school one day so he could smoke without getting caught and was struck by an automobile. In his last minutes he was approached by a demon disguised as an angel who promised to make it so that Roman's parents never found out he was smoking in return for a favor. Roman agreed without thinking and suddenly found himself in the demon's shoes. He was transformed and the demon was freed from his contract.

Roman called the demon out on his bullshit and the demon admitted to it and changed the terms of their deal. If Roman confessed to his parents he would be let out of the contract. Exactly what being 'let out' entailed since Roman had been dying literally minutes before was left undisclosed. However to make things interesting, the demon stole all of Roman's memories about his parents and how to find them.

It also sucked that nobody could see or hear him unless they were looking to make a deal.

He discovered that in order to regain his memories and grow powerful enough to manifest himself whenever he wanted, he must make deals with people. At first he only made small deals because he didn't want to trick people the way he had been tricked but he found that small deals took FOREVER to add up to remembering anything even remotely important about his parents. He stepped up his game and slowly built a reputation for himself so that he appeared in rumors and urban legends. One thing led to another and though he tried his best to be good, he started to see how awful and selfish people were so he stopped caring as much about not hurting them.

All he wanted was to see his parents one more time and who knew what would happen if they passed away before he could get to them?

Besides two other demons and what he THINKS might have been a ghost, Roman has met no other supernatural beings.

    Personality:

Roman is a good kid, but it's getting harder and harder to be good. He is frustrated with the world at large and is racing the clock. All he wants to do is go home to his parents and that is becoming more important to him than the well-being of other people.

Although he does not remember much about them, Roman was raised by two supportive and loving parents. They taught him to be honest (one memory he did regain) and were generally fun-loving people. His father told him about places all over the world because he worked at an airport and his mother always encouraged any creative streak Roman showed because she made jewelry for a living.

Roman turned out much the same (before the demon business anyway). Wanderlust is a big part of him and he has trouble staying put. He's a ham and loves to laugh or show off and make others around him laugh. Though he has no desire for a best friend he easily moves in and out of groups of people with little awkwardness or bad blood. If somebody is down, he'll listen and he easily accepts help from others. Roman isn't one to play hard-to-get. Though he may bend the truth, he rarely lies. He's also encouraging to an infectious degree. When someone is trying something new that they are enthusiastic about, Roman is often whipped up in the excitement and there cheering them on. Even when it's a terrible idea. In his mind it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission.

Since being shoved into the world of the supernatural, Roman has become strung-out and frightened. His patience is slowly shrinking and it upsets him because he was very proud of his chill disposition. Roman grew up a lot in his first year of college and is generally accepting of people. However, he has seen the nastiness of human nature and it makes him bitter and he insists that he is apart from them now even though he masquerades as one constantly. He likes to think that he's teaching humanity a lesson through the deals he makes. He is lost to the fantasy that he is always a victim trying to do good in the world through tough love. His childhood love of Ursula the sea witch plays into this and he's been known to quote Disney's The Little Mermaid from time to time while working his magic. Deep down he still wants to get this demon business over with with as little bloodshed as possible but it's getting difficult. His temper gets the best of him and results in cruel, twisted deals being struck.

Roman is proud of his accomplishments in learning the ropes of what he has become and has fallen prey to arrogance. If he does not feel like he's in danger he'll take risks and show off with his abilities. And speaking of showing off, you are better off posting all your secrets publicly to Facebook than you are telling anything to Roman. He's an enormous blabbermouth and the only secrets he seems to be able to keep are his own. Most of the time.

He likes to think of himself as a celebrity in hiding and in a way, he actually was back home. He created his own legend and that legend gave him power to preform more and more wonders. It also made people start to look for him and the once lone wolf had people tailing him. It was exhilarating and frightening and Roman constantly battles with himself over whether he loves the attention or not.

    Abilities:

    Deals-

OKAY SO. Roman is like a cartoony Faustian demon. He makes deals with people. He can provide nearly any item or circumstance for the right price. That price depends on how important the thing is. Prices can range from favors to memories to talents to pokemon cards to sandwiches. His deals will backfire on the customer if the price is too low because it’s less taxing on Roman. Making deals helps him both regain memories and add to his magic ‘reservoir’. If it empties out, he will turn invisible and have a hard time being seen and heard until he is summoned old school style.

Deals take much OOC planning. PLEASE NERF THIS LITTLE TWERP give me some good boundaries, LA mods!

To make deals, he uses an item called THE CLIPBOARD. It’s a strange, possibly sentient item that he channels his magic through and archives his past deals. If destroyed, Roman will have to find a new way to make deals and grow his magic supply.

    Image-

He can manifest effortlessly at this canon point, but still has to keep an eye on things if he wants to maintain a specific disguise or alteration to his base demon shape. He builds up this skill the same way one would strengthen a muscle. If he forgets to 'suck it in', his reflection and shadow will betray his true shape. Roman has trouble holding onto his disguises when overcome by strong emotions or nasty injuries.

He can disappear entirely, but still remains solid. If he is hiding in a room, you can trip on him or hear him breathing. He will not be invisible to high sensitives and other magical folks with certain gifts. He may appear as a hazy area or completely visible.

    Prestidigitation-

Roman can make illusions and manifest small solid objects (cups, pencils, fake money) that return to his magic reservoir when he is done using them.

    Pyromancy-

It would be silly if a demon couldn't produce fire. He can breathe fire and cast it from his hands and hooves. His temper will cause his body temperature to rise and produce smoke. This exerts magic.

    Float-

Roman can currently levitate about four feet above the ground (he's too scared to go any higher) and move at walking speed. This exerts magic.

    RUBY CITY: Art Gallery

    WELCOME ONE AND ALL
TO THE RUBY CITY ART GALLERY

    THE ART GALLERY -
is a small building located in SHOP 4 near the Theater and Cathedral. Roman tends to it by himself and it is open all day every day, though he may not always be present. SO FAR nobody has stolen any of the art on display so there's no need for him to babysit it. He does, however, lock up at night. If your character is the creative type and wants the rest of the city to know, they can talk to him and he'll set them up with an exhibit space!

  • Roman's gallery accepts art of ALL KINDS. He also provides framing and matting services and will arrange all your character's work for them. He may need help if your character submits a large sculpture because he is a tiny noodle boy.

  • Roman does NOT sell the artwork he displays, but if someone expresses interest in one of your characters pieces, feel free to HANDWAVE the event of him telling them about it so that they can set up a deal themselves!

    EXHIBIT SPACES:

C - These are free-for-all spaces that include the FRONT WINDOWS and a smaller circular SHELF with several tiers that can still be seen through the front windows. These spaces are intended to be for everyone to show off their artwork together as a menagerie and there is a limit to 3 pieces per person.

Pieces in this section can only be displayed for one WEEK before they are cycled out and returned to the artists.

A & B - These two rooms are the SPECIAL EXHIBIT rooms! They can be customized with shelves and tables if your character is not submitting art that is to be hung.

Special Exhibits stay in the gallery for a MONTH before they are cycled out. Since Roman does all the arrangements himself, renting out the A and B rooms will cost a barter. Roman likes sandwiches for his troubles, art supplies, and may even ask to keep a piece of your character's exhibit for himself!

[Setting up your character's exhibits can be ENTIRELY HANDWAVED! Feel free to have them make a post about it on the network to draw attention to their work. Roman may advertise for them from time to time.]

EMAIL ALERTS ARE TURNED OFF FOR THIS POST SO THAT YOU MAY MAKE YOUR OWN EXHIBIT TOPLEVEL THREADS BELOW TO LINK TO AND DESCRIBE WHAT THE EXHIBIT IS LIKE IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO DO SO IN A NETWORK POST OR LOG. IT'S ALSO JUST A NEAT PLACE TO KEEP TRACK OF ALL THE CREATIVE CHARACTERS IN THE CITY.

TO SET UP AN EXHIBIT, COMMENT BELOW WITH YOUR CHARACTER'S NAME and DATE OF EXHIBIT. JUST USE THE HONOR SYSTEM WHEN IT COMES TO WHO IS DISPLAYING WHAT, WHERE, AND WHEN.

    Fears:

    Whales-

Roman is pants-shittingly terrified of whales, especially the sounds whales make. Not that...there are any whales in Portes but sometimes howling wind can send him into an anxiety attack.

    Deep Water-

see above. THERE MIGHT BE WHALES

    Running out of Time-

He is racing the clock and worries that his parents will die before he finishes regaining enough information about them to find them.

    It’s All a Lie-

Roman fears that the demon lied to him. That he really isn’t going to remember his parents and that he’s ultimately going to turn into a horrible monster in the end. That he’s just as horrible as the humans he plays tricks on.

    Weaknesses:

    Errand Imp-

Roman can be summoned and put to work like any other demon in a variety of ways by skilled magic users.

    Wards-

If someone truly believes that something will ward him off (a cross, salt, etc...) it will so long as both he and they both think that it is so. He can be scalded by holy water.

    Poor Impulse Control-

Just what it says on the tin.

    Temper-

Roman is one hell of a hothead. He’s easy to fluster and egg on. He will fight you at the drop of a hat even if you’re bigger than he is.

    Wimp-

Roman is not a good fighter. Look at him. He is a tiny noodle.

    Spoiled-

Up until two years ago, Roman was living the perfect 90’s sitcom life with two loving parents, a house that was paid off, and a bright future. He’s not good at cooking or cleaning for himself.

    Mundane Strengths/Abilities:

-Math of almost all sorts, good at patterns and formulas

    -Art

-Nimble and quick, a good climber

-Fairly resilient against common illnesses like the flu or strep throat

    -Teeth and claws

-Everyman (roman is good at sliding in and out of conversations)

    Sensitivity/Magical Ability:

    Deals-

OKAY SO. Roman is like a cartoony faustian demon. He makes deals with people. He can provide nearly any item or circumstance for the right price. That price depends on how important the thing is. Prices can range from favors to memories to talents to pokemon cards to sandwiches. His deals with a backfire if the price is too low because it’s less taxing on him to do bad than to do good with his magic. Making deals helps him both regain memories and add to his magic ‘reservoir’. If it empties out, he will turn invisible and have a hard time being seen and heard until he is summoned oldschool style.

Deals are rare and desire much OOC planning. I cannot wait for the Portes dice to kick his butt.

To make deals, he uses an item called THE CLIPBOARD. It’s where he stores all his signatures. He stores it in some kind of hammer space idk but if it gets destroyed, he will no longer be able to make deals and will be stuck with a finite amount of magic.

    Image-

He can manifest effortlessly but still has to keep an eye on things if he wants to maintain a specific disguise or alteration to his base demon shape.

The only ‘disguise’ Roman has upon arrival is what he looked like before his accident--a normal human boy.

    Hocus Pocus-

Roman can perform small magics such as producing illusions and small solid objects (cups, pencils, fake money) that return to his magic reservoir when he is done using them. He can also produce small flames.

    Hovering-

Roman can currently levitate about four feet above the ground and move at walking speed. This exerts magic.

    SENSITIVITY-

Roman will count as a medium-sensitive. He picks up vibes from things, but does not fully understand them.

    DEMON BUSINESS

    [+] POWERS

Deals- OKAY SO. Roman is like a cartoony faustian demon. He makes deals with people. He can provide nearly any item or circumstance for the right price. That price depends on how important the thing is. Prices can range from favors to memories to talents to pokemon cards to sandwiches. His deals come with a backfire if the price is too low or he has a grudge against the person because it’s less taxing on him to do bad than to do good with his magic.

Image- He can manifest effortlessly but still has to keep an eye on things if he wants to maintain a specific disguise or alteration to his base demon shape.

The only ‘disguise’ Roman has upon arrival is what he looked like before his accident--a normal human boy.

Hocus Pocus- Roman can perform small magics such as producing illusions and small solid objects (cups, pencils, fake money) that return to his magic reservoir when he is done using them. He can also produce small flames.

Hovering- Roman can currently levitate about four feet above the ground and move at walking speed. This exerts magic.

SENSITIVITY- Roman will count as a medium-sensitive. He picks up vibes from things, but does not fully understand them.

    [-] WEAKNESSES

Errand Imp- Roman can be summoned and put to work like any other demon in a variety of ways by skilled magic users.

Wards- If someone truly believes that something will ward him off (a cross, salt, etc...) it will so long as both he and they both think that it is so. He can be scalded by holy water.

Temper- Roman is one hell of a hothead. He’s easy to fluster and egg on. He will fight you at the drop of a hat even if you’re bigger than he is. Get him riled up enough and he'll drop his disguise and reveal himself.

Wimp- He has sharp teeth and claws but he is still a tiny noodle baby. You could beat him up without trying very hard if you can catch him.

    Weight/Build:
    A shrimpy little noodle.

    MORE PICTURES: roman's art tag

HUMAN DISGUISE- More often than not, Roman interacts with people wearing his human face. Roman is a college freshman from Midwestern America, 1998, and boy does he look it. He wears a big baggy green tie-dye shirt, cargo shorts, sandals, glasses, and a goofy karate kid style headband. His sandy hair brushes his shoulders and his face is a battlefield of acne and freckles. His skin is light brown and his nose down turned slightly. After much trial and error a tiny goatee peppers his chin. He looks like a granola boy okay.

THE CARNIVAL BARKER- Roman has crafted a disguise with no visible tells. He resembles a carnival worker. He has borrowed features from people all around town and even has a unique voice in this shape. His stutter remains.

TRUE SHAPE- Whenever Roman is overcome with emotion or startled or badly injured, his disguise will fall away without fail. Sometimes his reflection will betray him and some magical characters can see straight through his glamour. Roman's true shape is instantly recognizable as a generic Judeo Christian demon. He sports a pair of curling ram's horns, small useless wings, brown cloven hooves and a long tail that splits at its end, tipped in toxic barbs. Fangs, claws, long forked tongue, slit pupils, yadda yadda you know the drill. His goat legs cause him to stand a little shorter than he normally would but he's able to move more quickly in this shape. Also he does the running goat jumpy thing when he's really hype it's adorable.

STUTTER- Roman was in a motorcycle wreck when he was 11 years old that left him with a hard consonant stutter. It's more noticeable when he's excited or upset.

THE CLIPBOARD <- Here is a list of all the deals Roman has made in-game.

    POWERS

[!] Roman may sometimes buy powers off another character while making a deal. Check his deals page for more info on that!

Roman's demon powers are VERY cartoony. He has only been doing the demon thing for two years so they aren't very refined.

Poison- Roman's tail is equipped with small poisonous quills that pull away and lodge themselves in a foe's skin. Its effects are nausea, temporary paralysis of the injured area, dizziness, searing pain, and abdominal cramping. If effects last for more than four hours, consult your doctor.

Image- Roman has to keep an eye on things if he wants to maintain a specific shape like his human disguise. However, if he forgets to 'suck it in' reflections will betray him and he can even lose parts of his disguise if surprised or overcome with emotion. Watching his eyes and tongue are good tells but look for his stutter and you've caugt him.

Corporeal Form- Roman has to work to even be seen and heard. He can easily pass out of the sight of MORTALS at will. Magical folk or mortals who are spiritually inclined can still probably see him or at least a disturbance where he is standing. You don't have to ask permission for this! He sucks, it's okay.

[!] Roman has learned the fine art of POSSESSION. While he can not pass through solid objects like a ghost while invisible, he can jump into people who are in a weakened state.

Theatric Magic- Roman can perform small magics such as hovering above the ground, making semi solid illusion objects appear, pulling scary monster faces, changing his voice, producing small sparks or flames, all at the cost of energy that he will have to rebuild by eating, sleeping or spending a lot of time invisible--which he hates.

Deal Making- This is the big one. Roman can make almost anything happen so long as the other party is fully willing when the deal is made and pays their dues in one way or another.

Huge stunts will absolutely drain him of energy and he's a very lazy kid so he'll usually try and find ways around it unless the client pays him with something very Important.

Roman never knows 100% of the time what will happen once the deal is struck. Sometimes he has an idea of what he needs to do to fulfill a contract but other times chilly sudden information will slip into the back of his brain. It freaks him out but shh don't tell anyone.

As of right now Roman does not know how to cancel or alter deals. Once it's done it's done unless another deal is made to undo it. Technicalities, bla bla bla.

    WEAKNESSES

Wards- With all these hellish goodies, Roman also comes with some unique weaknesses. Roman can be summoned like any other demon in a variety of ways. He is also a lesser demon so creatures far more magical than him can beat the pants off of him.

If someone truly believes that something will ward him off (a cross, salt, etc...) it will so long as both Roman and the other person believe it.

Sin Overdrive- Being what he is, Roman can easily fall prey to temptation. His worst offences are wrath and envy with a sprinkling of sloth.

    Mundane Stuff

    STRENGTHS
[+] Roman is very good at saying what people want to hear.
    [+] Climbs like a squirrel.
[+] Even before he became hellspawn Roman was very good at math.
[+] Very good at making paper footballs.
[+] Suffers no allergies and claims to have an iron stomach.

    WEAKNESSES
[-] Pants-shittingly terrified of whales and whale sounds and some dolphins. Very windy nights can also send him into panic attacks.
[-] Poor swimmer. Roman refuses to enter bodies of water he can't see the bottom of.
[-] Roman is a huge blabbermouth and can't keep a secret to save his life.
[-] Physically weak. If his powers are somehow disabled all he has are his teeth, claws, and poison barbs. He only has so many spines at his disposal and they take weeks to grow back.

He talks with a Midwestern accent and has a hard consonant stutter due to a motorcycle wreck he was in at age 11.

    Chosen PB: http://wolfyttwisted.tumblr.com/post/75454381765
I'll be drawing all his icons and junk as per usual

    Personality:

TL:DR- A villain in the making. Roman is a good kid but it's getting harder and harder to be good.

He's a bit of a ham and loves to laugh or show off and make others around him laugh.

However, he has seen the nastiness of human nature and it makes him bitter and he insists that he is apart from them even though he masquerades as one constantly. He likes to think that he's teaching humanity a lesson through the deals he makes. He is lost to the fantasy that he is always a victim trying to do good in the world through tough love. His childhood love of Ursula the sea witch plays into this and he's been known to quote The Little Mermaid from time to time while working his magic.

World Information: Roman's world is a version of our very own modern-day world only with hidden monsters and other mythological things that tend to be very attracted to main characters. That's it. That's the whole thing.

    History:

    http://wolfy-t.deviantart.com/art/STORY-Terms-and-Conditions-433329476
Here's his origin story. It's forty pages long and should only be read if you're waiting for the bus or something.

CLIFFNOTES VERSION: Roman took the long way home from school one day so he could smoke without getting caught and was struck by an automobile.

He stepped up his game and slowly built a reputation for himself. One thing led to another and though he tried his best to be good he started to see how awful and selfish people were so he stopped caring as much about hurting them.

All he wanted was to see his parents one more time and who knew what would happen if they passed away before he could get to them?

Besides two other demons and what he THINKS might have been a ghost, Roman has met no other supernatural beings.

    Abilities:

    MUNDANE STUFF

Math- Roman is strikingly good at math and was even a student tutor when he was in highschool.

Climbing- Even without the prehensile tail and claws, Roman is an absolute beast in trees and on the monkey bars.

Disney- Roman can quote The Little Mermaid in its entirety. This also counts as a character flaw. No, Roman. Nobody wants to sing Unda Da Sea with you, sit down.

[!] Weaknesses- Roman is pants-shittingly terrified of whales and especially the sounds whales make. Not that...there are any whales in Ruby City but sometimes howling wind can send him into an anxiety attack.

    DEMONY STUFF

Roman's demon powers are VERY cartoony. He has only been doing the demon thing for two years so they aren't very refined.

Image - At his pull-point, Roman has been making deals for a little under two years. He can physically manifest with complete ease but still has to keep an eye on things if he wants to maintain a specific shape. If he forgets to 'suck it in' his reflection can betray him and he can even lose his disguise if surprised or overcome with emotion.

Invisibility- Started above, he has to work to even be seen and heard. Though he can pass out of the sight of MORTALS magical folk can still probably see him or at least a disturbance where he is standing. He can interact with the physical world but can not pass through solid objects like a ghost. If he's hiding in a room you can trip over him. He rarely does this. Roman hates reverting to this state and hates thinking of himself as a coward.

Trickery- Roman can perform small magics such as making a pencil appear, producing small sparks or flames, and money all at the cost of energy that he will have to rebuild by eating, sleeping or spending a lot of time invisible--which he hates.

Deal Making- This is the big one. Roman can make almost anything happen so long as the other party is fully willing when the deal is made and pays their dues in one way or another.

Huge stunts will absolutely drain him of energy and he's a very lazy kid so he'll usually try and find ways around it unless the client pays him with something very Important to him.

Making deals can sometimes grant him abilities he wouldn't otherwise have such as being able to make blood ooze from the walls while pretending to be a ghost in order to get a stubborn mother-in-law to move out. Or turning into a big monster to scare that bully who pesters you so much. Roman never knows 100% of the time what will happen and sometimes he only knows once the deal is struck. It freaks him out a little but shh don't tell anyone.

As of right now Roman does not know how to cancel or alter deals. Once it's done it's done unless another deal is made to undo it. Technicalities, bla bla bla.

Big Deals will grant Roman a memory of his parents. It may be as insignificant as what he got them for Father's day or as important as a first name. Due to the nature of Ruby City he won't be receiving very many memories. One every couple of months if that.

Flight- Roman can hover about four feet above the ground. It's a good party trick but good for little else.

[!] Weaknesses- With all these goodies, Roman also comes with some unique weaknesses. Roman can be summoned like any other demon in a variety of ways. He is also a lesser demon so creatures far more magical than him can beat the pants off of him.

If someone truly believes that something will ward him off (a cross, salt, etc...) it will so long as both he and they both think that it is so.

    First Person:

[The granola kid slowly turns the watch over in his hands, unaware that it's on. The watch gets a good look at his acne, the train station roof, his shirt, and his face again. He's got his full human get-up going for him but it doesn't hide his panic one bit.]

What th' heck is this thing supposed to be? It's got more knobs and doobly doos than a Star T-treck gizmo. Did I steal it? What was I doing last night? I c-can't remember crap...I swear if that not-an-angel has something t-to do with this I'm gonna be so pissed.

[He wanders over to the bench and flops down, giving the watch a good look at his dumb sandals as he admires the engraving on the back.]

Or maybe I won it off somebody...Could be somebody's great great grandma's.

    Third Person:

    There were no cars.

Roman realized this as he made his way deeper into the city. At first he hadn't noticed it. He thought the quaint train station had been kept free of cars because the place looked like a tourist trap. The big red spire, the train tracks, the scenic river, the rustic shop fronts...but there were no telephone poles. No radios either.

He had been technically homeless for quite some time but he'd never really gone without before--only in those first terrifying days until he met Becky. He'd always been able to steal from shops or weasel his way into basements. Even in 1998 his world had been buzzing with information and out here? It was starting to get really spooky really fast. The kid swallowed and hunched his shoulders. He felt his wings slip through his disguise and shift uncomfortably underneath his backpack but couldn't bring himself to care about that right now. His palms were sweaty and his throat was starting to close up.

Roman felt even more lost than he'd felt walking the long roads between cities. At least then he'd had the telephone wires to follow. They always led somewhere. The demon stopped near the obelisk and craned his neck back to see the top. He'd seen the one at DC on a school trip once but he'd never seen anything like this. The longer looked at it the dizzier he got. Roman pushed his glasses back up and went trotting back to the train station.

Maybe he could catch the next one. There'd be a next train, right?
