CHARACTERName: Roman Gulliver
Age: 19-20 at death, has been 'missing' for about two years. Considers himself of US drinking age.
Appearance: Roman is a college freshman from Midwestern America, 1995, and boy does he look it. He wears a big baggy green tie-dye shirt, cargo shorts, sandals (when he wears shoes) glasses, and a goofy karate kid style headband. His sandy hair brushes his shoulders and his face is a battlefield of acne and freckles. His skin is light brown and his nose down turned slightly. After much trial and error a tiny goatee peppers his chin. He looks like a granola boy okay.
Then there are the demony bits when he so chooses--a pair of curling ram's horns, small useless wings, rusty cloven hooves and a long tail that splits at its end, tipped in toxic barbs. Fangs, claws, long forked tongue, slit pupils, yadda yadda. This is his BASE form, however, and if he is weakened to the point of utter exhaustion he will revert to this.
He talks with a Midwestern accent and has a hard consonant stutter due to a motorcycle wreck he was in at age 11.
Chosen PB: http://wolfyttwisted.tumblr.com/post/75454381765I'll be drawing all his icons and junk as per usual
Personality: TL:DR- A villain in the making. Roman is a good kid but it's getting harder and harder to be good. He is frustrated with the world at large and is racing the clock. All he wants to do is go home to his parents and that is becoming more important to him than the well-being of other people.
Although he does not remember much about them, Roman was raised by two supportive and loving parents. They taught him to be honest (one memory he did regain) and were generally fun-loving people. His father told him about places all over the world because he worked at an airport and his mother always encouraged any creative streak Roman showed because she made jewelry for a living.
Roman turned out much the same (before the demon business anyway). Wanderlust is a big part of him and he has trouble staying put. He's a bit of a ham and loves to laugh or show off and make others around him laugh. Though he has no desire for a
best friend he easily moves in and out of groups of people with little awkwardness or bad blood. If somebody is down, he'll listen and he easily accepts help from others. Roman isn't one to play hard-to-get. Though he may bend the truth, he rarely lies. He's also encouraging to an infectious degree. When someone is trying something new that they are enthusiastic about, Roman is often whipped up in the excitement and there cheering them on. Even when it's a terrible idea. In his mind it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission.
Since being shoved into the world of the supernatural, Roman has become strung-out and frightened. His patience is slowly shrinking and it upsets him because he was very proud of his chill disposition. Roman grew up a lot in his first year of college and is generally accepting of people. However, he has seen the nastiness of human nature and it makes him bitter and he insists that he is apart from them even though he masquerades as one constantly. He likes to think that he's teaching humanity a lesson through the deals he makes. He is lost to the fantasy that he is always a victim trying to do good in the world through tough love. His childhood love of Ursula the sea witch plays into this and he's been known to quote The Little Mermaid from time to time while working his magic. Deep down he still wants to get this demon business over with with as little bloodshed as possible but it's getting difficult. His temper gets the best of him and results in cruel, twisted deals being struck.
Roman is proud of his accomplishments in learning the ropes of what he has become and has fallen prey to arrogance. If he does not feel like he's in danger he'll take risks and show off with his abilities. And speaking of showing off, you are better off posting all your secrets publicly to Facebook than you are telling anything to Roman. He's an enormous blabbermouth and the only secrets he seems to be able to keep are his own. Most of the time.
He likes to think of himself as a celebrity in hiding and in a way, he actually was back home. He created his own legend and that legend gave him power to preform more and more wonders. It also made people start to look for him and the once lone wolf had people tailing him. It was exhilarating and frightening and Roman constantly battles with himself over whether he loves the attention or not.
World Information: Roman's world is a version of our very own modern-day world only with hidden monsters and other mythological things that tend to be very attracted to main characters. That's it. That's the whole thing.
History: http://wolfy-t.deviantart.com/art/STORY-Terms-and-Conditions-433329476 Here's his origin story. It's forty pages long and should only be read if you're waiting for the bus or something.
CLIFFNOTES VERSION: Roman took the long way home from school one day so he could smoke without getting caught and was struck by an automobile. In his last minutes he was approached by a demon disguised as an angel who promised to make it so that Roman's parents never found out he was smoking in return for a favor. Roman agreed without thinking and suddenly found himself in the demon's shoes. He was transformed and the demon was freed from his contract.
Roman called the demon out on his bullshit and the demon admitted to it and changed the terms of their deal. If Roman confessed to his parents he would be let out of the contract. Exactly what being 'let out' entailed since Roman had been dying literally minutes before was left undisclosed. However to make things interesting, the demon stole all of Roman's memories about his parents and how to find them.
It also sucked that nobody could see or hear him unless they were looking to make a deal.
He discovered that in order to regain his memories and grow powerful enough to manifest himself whenever he wanted, he must make deals with people. At first he only made small deals because he didn't want to trick people the way he had been tricked but he found that small deals took FOREVER to add up to remembering anything even remotely important about his parents. He stepped up his game and slowly built a reputation for himself. One thing led to another and though he tried his best to be good he started to see how awful and selfish people were so he stopped caring as much about hurting them.
All he wanted was to see his parents one more time and who knew what would happen if they passed away before he could get to them?
Besides two other demons and what he THINKS might have been a ghost, Roman has met no other supernatural beings.
Abilities: MUNDANE STUFFMath- Roman is strikingly good at math and was even a student tutor when he was in highschool.
Climbing- Even without the prehensile tail and claws, Roman is an absolute beast in trees and on the monkey bars.
Disney- Roman can quote The Little Mermaid in its entirety. This also counts as a character flaw. No, Roman. Nobody wants to sing Unda Da Sea with you, sit down.
[!] Weaknesses- Roman is pants-shittingly terrified of whales and especially the sounds whales make. Not that...there are any whales in Ruby City but sometimes howling wind can send him into an anxiety attack.
DEMONY STUFFRoman's demon powers are VERY cartoony. He has only been doing the demon thing for two years so they aren't very refined.
Image - At his pull-point, Roman has been making deals for a little under two years. He can physically manifest with complete ease but still has to keep an eye on things if he wants to maintain a specific shape. If he forgets to 'suck it in' his reflection can betray him and he can even lose his disguise if surprised or overcome with emotion.
Invisibility- Started above, he has to work to even be seen and heard. Though he can pass out of the sight of MORTALS magical folk can still probably see him or at least a disturbance where he is standing. He can interact with the physical world but can not pass through solid objects like a ghost. If he's hiding in a room you can trip over him. He rarely does this. Roman hates reverting to this state and hates thinking of himself as a coward.
Trickery- Roman can perform small magics such as making a pencil appear, producing small sparks or flames, and money all at the cost of energy that he will have to rebuild by eating, sleeping or spending a lot of time invisible--which he hates.
Deal Making- This is the big one. Roman can make almost anything happen so long as the other party is fully willing when the deal is made and pays their dues in one way or another.
Huge stunts will absolutely drain him of energy and he's a very lazy kid so he'll usually try and find ways around it unless the client pays him with something very Important to him.
Making deals can sometimes grant him abilities he wouldn't otherwise have such as being able to make blood ooze from the walls while pretending to be a ghost in order to get a stubborn mother-in-law to move out. Or turning into a big monster to scare that bully who pesters you so much. Roman never knows 100% of the time what will happen and sometimes he only knows once the deal is struck. It freaks him out a little but shh don't tell anyone.
As of right now Roman does not know how to cancel or alter deals. Once it's done it's done unless another deal is made to undo it. Technicalities, bla bla bla.
Big Deals will grant Roman a memory of his parents. It may be as insignificant as what he got them for Father's day or as important as a first name. Due to the nature of Ruby City he won't be receiving very many memories. One every couple of months if that.
Flight- Roman can hover about four feet above the ground. It's a good party trick but good for little else.
[!] Weaknesses- With all these goodies, Roman also comes with some unique weaknesses. Roman can be summoned like any other demon in a variety of ways. He is also a lesser demon so creatures far more magical than him can beat the pants off of him.
If someone truly believes that something will ward him off (a cross, salt, etc...) it will so long as both he and they both think that it is so.
First Person: [The granola kid slowly turns the watch over in his hands, unaware that it's on. The watch gets a good look at his acne, the train station roof, his shirt, and his face again. He's got his full human get-up going for him but it doesn't hide his panic one bit.]What th' heck is this thing supposed to be? It's got more knobs and doobly doos than a Star T-treck gizmo. Did I steal it? What was I doing last night? I c-can't remember crap...I swear if that not-an-angel has something t-to do with this I'm gonna be so pissed.
[He wanders over to the bench and flops down, giving the watch a good look at his dumb sandals as he admires the engraving on the back.]Or maybe I won it off somebody...Could be somebody's great great grandma's.
Third Person: There were no cars.
Roman realized this as he made his way deeper into the city. At first he hadn't noticed it. He thought the quaint train station had been kept free of cars because the place looked like a tourist trap. The big red spire, the train tracks, the scenic river, the rustic shop fronts...but there were no telephone poles. No radios either.
He had been technically homeless for quite some time but he'd never really
gone without before--only in those first terrifying days until he met Becky. He'd always been able to steal from shops or weasel his way into basements. Even in 1998 his world had been buzzing with information and out here? It was starting to get really spooky really fast. The kid swallowed and hunched his shoulders. He felt his wings slip through his disguise and shift uncomfortably underneath his backpack but couldn't bring himself to care about that right now. His palms were sweaty and his throat was starting to close up.
Roman felt even more lost than he'd felt walking the long roads between cities. At least then he'd had the telephone wires to follow. They always led
somewhere. The demon stopped near the obelisk and craned his neck back to see the top. He'd seen the one at DC on a school trip once but he'd never seen anything like this. The longer looked at it the dizzier he got. Roman pushed his glasses back up and went trotting back to the train station.
Maybe he could catch the next one. There'd be a next train, right?
